gathering research of pattern from the streets, on a walk with Rach i spotted this.

valentines day

because me and the girlfriend were short money around valentines day, we decided to make each other presents. she made me a nice poster of us both. i went online to find out how to make origami flowers. i made a huge flower i don't know how to spell and 5 lilly's and 4 tulips. it opened my eyes to the possibilities of paper manipulation and paper folding.

coral forms and natural shapes

after watching a fair too many nature documentary's as i have too much time on my hands on bbc iplayer and 4od i noticed patterns in coral formations. its like the best place to look for information is nature and i found loads of things.

there are extraordinary and beautiful things created by nature and natural formations. the them of the project is repeat and nature has a funny way of repeating its self in its self. there is a lot of pattern and symmetry within nature.

there is loads of pictures that relate to the theme.

i love this image. i even have it as my laptop background. i like it because its an orb shape and its repeats its self and its amazing knowing how these coral reefs work.

this is a similar shape which can be reproduced using paper, or a similar pattern at least. it almost looks like a brain.

there are loads of these corals in the world, they certainly are not rare. they cant help but remind me of a brain though.

the patterns are very similar. similar patterns can be found a lot in nature. the coral and brain pattern has give me a good idea for what i might do

INFLUENCE

after my workshops i started looking towards other artists for inspiration. i looked at the book Tangible High Touch Visual which was a friend of mines at the time and was amazed at what i was seeing. what i had been doing with paper and what they were doing with their chosen media was completely different. at first i started look at more structured work like Kyle Bean's work. this is incredible interesting and incredibly skilled.

as you can clearly see, Kyle is a gifted child and his work is incredibly detailed and beautiful. he has also done a lot of abstract art with different media which i also find interesting.

Michael T. Rea works in similar ways and constructs huge amazing works.

very structured and huge using wood and other materials. for the materials used this piece i have posted is surprisingly detailed.

i started to look at more natural forms after this and i was pleased with what i found.

i found this. this beautiful work of art. its huge and smooth and natural looking. i really like this, i like the natural look. its inspired me to try things similar with paper. it seems possible.

the people who made this also have done other huge natural forms made from other material. there are works made from string which is influential to my wrk that i have been looking at in reference to my own work.

Second Sweeny Session

in this workshop session we were told to attempt more prototype but try to increase the size of paper we use. this for me was a better session and i ended up with, in my eyes, better results than my first session. Richard Sweeny in this workshop helped by introducing some simple techniques that i was able to develop further when experimenting with the material for myself.

i first started by scoring a curved line down the paper so it creases neatly. it gives a smooth outcome that can easily be developed further.

from this i added more score lines. this when done close to another curved line creates a nice bridge across the paper. from this shape with the bridge i manipulated one of the curved lines which travelled through two sides of the paper and brought it back in on itself to create a tunnel which catches light in strange ways.

i was pleased at the outcome i had created and tried to develop this method further.

i tried to use the scoring technique to create a shape that repeated itself. the results were nice and the shape that was created on top from where the curves had removed elements of the original shape.

 also in the workshop i tried a different approach at repeat withe the idea of circle and spirals repeating over and over within themselves. once i had my head around how it would work it was relatively easy. i really like this shapes simplicity. from this i decided to keep my objects simple and try to create repetitive shapes that look good to the eye.(my eye)

i tried another spiral model which came out nicely, this was slightly more intricate than the last one but has the same effect.

 i went back to the not spiralling my paper and went for a mirrored effect. i really like the outcome of this peace and it was one of my favourites of the day. very simple, four score lines, two at each side folded and pinched together to created what some people have referred to as an ants head. the folds look really good mirrored to each other.

i took the mirroring idea and took it to the next step, remembering to keep it simple. i folded the paper like i did in the one before but this time the score lines travel through two sides of the square paper. i reflected this on the other side and i created this amazing looking shape.

this is a model i made outside of uni in my own time, i was just trying thing i could remember trying in the session. it was fun and looked quite good.
