final piece

this is what i came up with. i place the images side by side to form a square so that as you follow the images along it would look like a stop-motion image laid out in front of you. i repeated the images so i could make a square and so that i had 100 images which followed the theme of the brief. i like the black and orange on the page so i duplicated it in the text box. i used Prestige Elite std Bold as my font in the text box as i feel it resembles a type writers stamp like font with a bit of a more modern edge.

the information on the poster was the only information allowed. the lines of the text box follow the lines of the square of images and helps balance the poster. if i had made it bigger or smaller, which i did try then the poster would not sit right which it didn't. i also tried different coloured fonts like white which draws your attention to the writing but the orange does that job well and it wasn't need. i felt the other colours were to strong a contrast and wasn't necessary.

this is my final poster design. to get to this i tried having the text box just above centre and have the images evenly spaced around the page with gaps in between them. this looked ok at first but by the time i had finished the poster looked chaotic. it wasn't clear cut and there wasn't really any main focus point due to the amount of images required. this is what i came up with then. the images tight together with the text at the bottom. the poster is bottom heavy and has a bit of weight to it. the images and text box flow and its easy to understand what you're looking at and what the images mean. the other way was not clear what the purpose of the images were but together like this, it is easy to see what they are doing and is easy to follow.

task 2

in task 2 we are to create a poster for GF Smith paper and design distributors, a 100th year anniversary that celebrates the theme of 100 and paper. we were given tutorials that really helped. these were in both grid structure and layout and photography, both of which were and still remain extremely useful tools. it really helps to have knowledge on the subjects.

i looked to other people for inspiration and gather ideas. i looked at the words are pictures studio and tomato design. it wasn't easy coming up with ideas for the poster. the rules were it had to be made from paper and photographed in as the background and the rest could be edited digitally.

 i had a few ideas for what i could do like 100 images on a page of a design from 100 different angles. i could make 100 tiny paper objects.

i started to look back at my work that i had already done knowing that i didn't want to have the same style design in my poster. i then remembered what i had done for valentines day. i had to advertise paper and one of the oldest paper art tradition is japanese paper folding. it is also instantly recognisable world wide.  the crane in japanese culture is a symbol of honour and loyalty. to make 1000 origami cranes is a sign of love in japanese culture, love and what would appear to be a lot of determination. the origami crane is also the most popular form of origami and the most well known.

i remembered going on sites that showed you how to make origami animals and flowers and having to follow the websites slide by slide. i wanted to recreate this on my poster so that when you looked at the poster it advertised GF Smith well but also was instructions for do it your self origami. a kind of interactive poster.

this was the kind of thing i was after, the way i was going to do it was by photographing step by step every move i made. i don't like the white background and i loved the black and orange in task one so i went back to that.

unlike the screenshot i got from the web sit origami-instructions.com i need to have no words so the images had to be of every move, every crease that i made.

what i tried

i wanted to see if they would to work together and they did.for a while i believed that this was it and i was going to hang the individually but after a lot of thought they are now all together as some super coral ball.

plans for my piece

i have a few ideas for my final piece. one is to have lots of repetitive shape singularly hanging independently. the idea i have been leaning towards most though is to make a random coral reef form shape using repeated shaped. it would be like the coral shape i have as my background of my laptop. i would use one of the shapes that i have made in the workshops and mould them together to form a coral looking creature.

hopefully if all goes well i will have a good little creation and due to the holes in the object it will catch light in very strange ways. hopefully.

a thriving coral is colourful and i will try to do the piece in bright orange. its a bright colour and i'm ginger.

gathering research of pattern from the streets, on a walk with Rach i spotted this.

valentines day

because me and the girlfriend were short money around valentines day, we decided to make each other presents. she made me a nice poster of us both. i went online to find out how to make origami flowers. i made a huge flower i don't know how to spell and 5 lilly's and 4 tulips. it opened my eyes to the possibilities of paper manipulation and paper folding.

coral forms and natural shapes

after watching a fair too many nature documentary's as i have too much time on my hands on bbc iplayer and 4od i noticed patterns in coral formations. its like the best place to look for information is nature and i found loads of things.

there are extraordinary and beautiful things created by nature and natural formations. the them of the project is repeat and nature has a funny way of repeating its self in its self. there is a lot of pattern and symmetry within nature.

there is loads of pictures that relate to the theme.

i love this image. i even have it as my laptop background. i like it because its an orb shape and its repeats its self and its amazing knowing how these coral reefs work.

this is a similar shape which can be reproduced using paper, or a similar pattern at least. it almost looks like a brain.

there are loads of these corals in the world, they certainly are not rare. they cant help but remind me of a brain though.

the patterns are very similar. similar patterns can be found a lot in nature. the coral and brain pattern has give me a good idea for what i might do
